Muhurat Trading 2026: Timing, Meaning, and Whether It Actually Matters

Muhurat Trading is a short ceremonial trading session held by NSE and BSE on Diwali/Lakshmi Puja — Sunday 8 November 2026 — considered auspicious for beginning new investments in the Hindu new year (Samvat). For 2026, NSE and BSE set an afternoon session: pre-open from 2:05 pm, then normal trading from 2:20 pm to 3:30 pm. For a long-term investor, the honest answer is that the session is symbolic, not a market signal — a small token purchase is a fine tradition to keep, but there's no evidence the hour predicts the year ahead.

What this page coversWhat Muhurat Trading is, its history, and whether it matters for a long-term investor

For a market that runs on fixed weekday hours the rest of the year, Muhurat Trading is a genuine oddity — one session a year, in 2026 on a Sunday afternoon, both exchanges open specifically because the timing is considered auspicious, not because there's ordinary business to transact. It's a tradition worth understanding on its own terms, separate from whatever it does or doesn't mean for your actual investments.

What is Muhurat Trading, and why does it happen on Diwali?

Muhurat Trading is a roughly one-hour ceremonial session that NSE and BSE hold outside normal market hours, on Diwali/Lakshmi Puja day. "Muhurat" means an auspicious moment in Hindu tradition, and the session exists so that trading for the new Samvat year symbolically begins at a well-chosen time — similar in spirit to buying gold on Dhanteras or starting something new on Dussehra.

BSE has held a Muhurat session since 1957. NSE adopted the practice after its own equity trading began in 1994, and both exchanges have held a session every year since, war and pandemic years included — conducted remotely in 2020 rather than skipped.

What's the confirmed Muhurat Trading time for 2026?

NSE and BSE announced the timing on 19 October 2026. 2026 session — Sunday 8 November, afternoon:

  • Pre-open session: 2:05 pm to 2:20 pm
  • Normal market trading: 2:20 pm to 3:30 pm

Muhurat Trading was traditionally held in the evening; the exchanges moved it to the afternoon in 2025 and kept it there for 2026. NSE stated that all trades executed in the session result in settlement obligations, just like a normal trading day. Tuesday 10 November 2026 is a market holiday for Diwali Balipratipada.

The exchanges' circulars also set times for block deals, the closing auction session and other segments; check NSE's or BSE's website, or your broker, if you need those.

Does Muhurat Trading actually matter for a long-term investor?

No — there's no real evidence that the session's direction predicts the market's performance over the coming year. It runs for about an hour, on volumes far thinner than a normal trading day, with a meaningful share of participants placing small symbolic orders rather than genuine positions. That combination makes a single Muhurat hour a poor sample to draw any conclusion from — good or bad.

None of that makes the tradition pointless. A small, symbolic purchase — sometimes as little as ₹1,000, in a stock or fund you already understand — is a perfectly reasonable way to mark the occasion, the same way lighting a diya doesn't need to predict anything to be worth doing. Treat it as tradition, not as a trading strategy, and it stays exactly what it should be: a nice way to start the new Samvat year, not a market call.

Is it riskier to trade during Muhurat Trading than on a normal day?

Somewhat, yes. Volumes are thinner than a normal session, which can widen bid-ask spreads and move prices more sharply on even modest order sizes. The practical fix is simple: use a limit order rather than a market order, and keep the size small enough that the outcome genuinely doesn't change anything for you either way.

Existing SIPs and holdings don't need any special handling around this session — a Systematic Investment Plan runs on its own fixed schedule regardless of what any single session does.

What's actually worth doing this Diwali, beyond the ceremonial trade?

If Muhurat Trading's spirit of "start something new" is the part that resonates, the more useful version of that instinct is usually something you'd been meaning to do anyway — finally starting a SIP you'd been putting off, or confirming a nominee is correctly named on an existing folio — rather than treating the hour itself as a signal.

If you'd rather talk it through

Whether Muhurat Trading is worth participating in at all, or how it fits alongside everything else landing this Diwali, is easier as a short conversation than a solo decision. We're happy to walk through it with you — in person if you're in Pimple Saudagar or Wakad, or over a call otherwise.

Frequently Asked Questions

What exactly is Muhurat Trading?

It's a special, roughly one-hour trading session that both NSE and BSE hold on Diwali/Lakshmi Puja day, outside normal market hours — in 2026 on a Sunday, when markets are otherwise closed. "Muhurat" refers to an auspicious time in Hindu tradition, and the session exists so that trading activity for the new Samvat (Vikram Samvat calendar) year can symbolically begin at a considered-auspicious moment.

What time is Muhurat Trading on 8 November 2026?

NSE and BSE set an afternoon session for Sunday 8 November 2026: pre-open from 2:05 pm to 2:20 pm, and normal market trading from 2:20 pm to 3:30 pm. NSE stated that all trades executed in the session result in settlement obligations, as on any normal trading day.

Does the market's performance during Muhurat Trading predict how the year ahead will go?

No, and it's worth being direct about this rather than repeating the folklore. The session runs for about an hour, on unusually thin trading volumes, with many participants placing small symbolic orders rather than genuine positions — that combination makes it a poor sample to read anything into. Genuine market direction over a full year depends on far more than one ceremonial hour.

Should I do anything different with my SIPs or existing investments because of Muhurat Trading?

No. A Systematic Investment Plan runs on its own fixed schedule regardless of what happens in any single session, and existing holdings don't need to be touched because of a symbolic trading window. If Muhurat Trading prompts you to finally start something you'd been putting off — a new SIP, a pending nomination update — that's a fine use of the occasion; changing an existing, working plan because of it isn't.

I want to participate in the tradition. What's a sensible way to do it?

Many investors place a small, symbolic purchase — sometimes as little as ₹1,000 — in a stock or fund they already understand, purely to mark the occasion. If you do this, use a limit order rather than a market order (thin volumes can move prices more than usual) and treat it as tradition, not strategy — the amount should be small enough that the outcome genuinely doesn't matter to your finances.

Does Muhurat Trading affect mutual fund NAVs the same way it affects stock prices?

No. Mutual fund transactions (purchase or redemption) placed on Sunday 8 November are handled like any other weekend transaction — processed at the NAV of the next business day, subject to the fund's normal cut-off time rules. The Muhurat equity session doesn't create a separate NAV window for mutual funds. If you're timing a transaction around Diwali, also note that Tuesday 10 November 2026 is a market holiday for Diwali Balipratipada.

Is it riskier to place stock trades during Muhurat Trading than on a normal day?

Volumes are thinner than a regular session, which can mean wider bid-ask spreads and sharper price moves on smaller order sizes — a practical reason to keep any Muhurat-day order small and to use a limit price rather than a market order, independent of the ceremonial aspect.

Where can I find the confirmed 2026 Muhurat Trading time closer to the date?

Both exchanges announced the 2026 session window on 19 October 2026, and it's shown in the "at a glance" box above. NSE's and BSE's own websites carry the full schedule, including the block deal and closing auction timings.
